Christine O’Kelly, I’m Talking To You!

Posted February 15, 2008 in Business

Christine, I have a confession to make. I got a copy of your eBook (How I Built a Profitable Freelance Business for Under $50 … And How You Can Too!) and read it through it. I thought it was great, even though I wasn’t technically a freelancer – I just wanted to pull out tips to make my current web business better. And it did.

Christine o'Kelly, I'm Talkin' To You!But then the nagging thought kept popping up … could I really build a freelancing business quickly and easily without pouring tons of time/effort into websites, logos, etc? Was I leaving cash on the table by not selling some other services I was good at? Was I limiting myself by focusing only on what I considered my “core” business? Could I really charge what I thought was worth for services that I did on the side? Could I possibly link to any more of your posts? I’ll stop now.

Here’s the skinny. Two weeks ago, I decided to give it a shot and opened myself up to selling copywriting services, and not just coaching. I took just a little bit of advice from your eBook … and a few emails later, the floodgates were open. In the last two weeks, I’ve had work streaming in and I’ve banked enough cash to take care of a few special things I wanted to do for my family.

But Now, Christine, You’re On Notice!

Ok, making a few hundred bucks on the spur of the moment is nice, but now I’m putting your eBook to the test. Over the next 30 days I’m going to make the time to do every flippin’ thing you talk about and see how far it gets me. And everyone gets to see what happens right here. So the challenge is on … can I build, say, $1000-$2000 a month in 30 days without killing myself (I have a day job and 3 kids, you know)? After reading your eBook, I think I can … but I’m going to have to tap you for some advice as I go through it. So watch your inbox. :-)

And If You’re Not Christine, You’re On Notice Too!

For the 100+ people who downloaded Christine’s eBook from her blog a few weeks ago, this post is a good place to ask your questions in the comments thread (and to let Christine know how you’re liking her book). I know that everyone reading FreelanceFolder wants to learn how to build their freelancing business – now you get to see a real live case study unfold real-time.

I Guess I’m On Notice, Too …

Now it’s time for me to get to work instead of calling everyone out. Feel free to call me out in the comments if you must, and subscribe to the FreelanceFolder RSS feed to see how it all pans out.

Until next time …

Dave

    Hey Dave,

    I also read Christine’s ebook and actually just went through it again last night. I haven’t implemented anything just yet but am planning on a few additions to my existing business.

    I will follow your progress on your blog and look forward to see results! :-)

    I will be watching this and can’t wait to see how it turns out Dave. I’ve been tossing around the idea of freelancing to add to my income for the past 2 weeks and can’t seem to pull the trigger. Your experiment may be just enough to push me over the edge one way or another.

    Hi, I have also read Christine’s book and have yet to “pull the trigger” as she recommends. I’m looking forward to see your results.

    I’ve followed Christine’s advice and bundled my services into packages. Thanks to that, I’ve easily made thousands more dollars. There is so much great stuff packed into that little book. She could have charged over $70 for it and it would be worth it. At $12, it’s a steal.

    @James –
    Keeping busy already … more soon …

    @Steve –
    Pull that damn trigger … what have you got to lose?

    @Zeke -
    What’s the excuse for not pulling the trigger? Figure it out and then tell yourself “So what?”

    @Michael -
    It’s good stuff, indeed. :-)

    Guess what? I’ve pulled the trigger. I sent out 2 emails yesterday and have already received 1 potential lead. I’m in the midst of negotiating my rates. I will be sending out emails to another 8 potential companies by the end of this week. Here goes…
