I just started using the software Harvest yesterday and I’m already seeing the benefits. Just knowing that my time is being tracked is allowing me to be even more focused on what I’m doing at the moment I decide I’m going to do it.

Hi, interesting post.

What also could make freelancing hard is having a mindset that works against you. Especially starting freelancers whom having start building a track record can think and feel inadequate. Like you mention in #5 you will have to know how to sell your service.

I worked sales most of my work life and it’s not easy. Reading news to stay current in your industry, taking new training to continue to sharpen your skills, on top of doing all the activities involved in marketing/selling/delivering your service.

What really makes it hard is the shifting of the thinking and behaviors to being your own business owner. Most cases employee thinking creeps up and makes it hard.

Being a small team, we always found that tracking time seemed more of a concept than something so easily applied in practical life. The way we do it is completely against the Conrad’s methodology but normally before we we quote, we enter a meeting first to get to know the client. This allows us to suss them up, get a hold of their personality and then we decide if we should add in some ‘buffer’ time or not. Yes a lot of it is based on gut feel, it may not be the right application but it’s worked mostly for us.

We use a variety of systems and there are several excellent ones which we definitely add value to our business! http://www.elevateapp.co.uk/ – Simple tracking for the small jobs which don’t isn’t worth writing paperwork for, http://www.xero.com/ – Beautiful Accountancy software, Toggl.com – Time tracking software. Each of these are very easy to use and allow us to track work and make sure we get the most out of it all.

I would definitely say finding high quality content writers is a struggle. There seems to only be those writers from foreign countries that can write for cheap sums, i.e. $5. Then there are those $1k+ writers that can get it done, but I feel like there needs to be some middle ground.

Just some of my personal experience; I would love some rec’s though!

Many great points above for not specializing.

Another point is that it’s scary as hell.

When specializing, I strongly recommend focusing on a challenge that a specific kind of client has so that you’re not specializing in a technology (e.g. php or photoshop), but are specializing in a need – a thing clients can closely relate to.

For example, a restaurant owner is often insanely busy and needs a web designer who is very proactive. They don’t need another staff person to chase after. If you can show proactive help, it’s a big plus for them … of course a portfolio and testimonials of other similar restaurants would do a lot.

I am all for specializing … or at least moving in that direction with your favorite projects, and worthwhile ones.
