i absolutely agree. i just quit my office job to pursue freelancing fulltime. i really wasn’t happy with change request forms and inconsiderate bosses. im glad to have done this very healthy decision. i’d like to able to apply what you have shared.~

Hi Bob,
You couldn’t represent more in this post my feelings …
I worked in ad agencies where personal agendas are more important than the benefit of the clients image. I often used to feel irritated at being used by employees.
Your suggestions are really vital to attain fulfilment personally and professionally.

Bob, good stuff. I’d like to offer a suggestion related to spec work: Blogs replace spec work. If someone cant’ get a good enough sense of you from your blog (which is also a sidekick to your portfolio), you don’t need to work for them. People who want too much out of spec work DON’T want to pay you fairly, and there is just no reason to work that bullshit. In the end, you will be making so little that you will be losing money, not making it.

I’m going to have to disagree with your assessment of “spec work” as a contributor to the lowering of standards. I’ve done spec work and solicited it. In both cases, I submitted my best effort and expected the best efforts of the freelancers I was reviewing. To veer a little off-topic, the real issue behind spec work is the question of who controls the marketplace: the artist or the client.

Great points, otherwise. I think it’s important that we seek to make an impact for the better in whatever we do.

IFor a year, I slogged out material for a writing company and my heart wasn’t into it. Today, I’m definitely following my calling over at Disaboom.com where I feature people with disabilities from all walks of life. I love it when I receive an email that says “you’ve touched me in some way with what you wrote.” That rocks my world.
