[...] How to weather the storm by making your money work for you - ok, I thought I was the only one who used rediculously long article titles; I was wrong. Regardless of that, you will find some great advice here to help you properly manage your money. I’m slowly learning how to do this and it feels great to start seeing myself as “ahead” instead of “always catching up”. [...]

[...] There have been some awesome finance-centric posts floating around the blogosphere lately. April Borbon wrote about the 10 Items You Absolutely Need For Financial Security over at Freelance Switch, and I immediately began implementing some of her tips (better late than never!), such as throwing 30% of each paycheck into an interest-bearing savings account for quarterly tax purposes, and working harder on becoming debt free. Jeffrey Way helps out over at Freelance Folder with a simple budget how-to. [...]

Great article. Budgeting seems even tougher when it's personal and not business.

This is a great post, because it takes something percieved as difficult (budgetting) and makes it so easy, even I understand it. Order your expenses and cut away at the bottom, if you don't make enough. That's excellent advice!

A nice easy to understand post on a financial topic is usually tough to find. This post was an easy read with good, sound advice. This is the way to do it. Thanks.

most bank accounts will also let you setup auto transfers into a separate account, so you can automatically save money without having to think about it. when you pay yourself first, you tend to save much more than when you don't.

For instance, i setup 3 'savings' accounts with my bank. using my online banking, i setup auto transfers each month into each account. one is my rainy day savings account. i put $150 every other week into this one. This is my buffer account. if something happens, car breaks down, i get seriously ill and can't work, etc, i know i have a buffer to work from. Another account is my Travel account. i put $25/month in here. so by Christmas, i'll have enough saved up to buy a plane ticket home. The third is my tax savings account. Since i'm 1099, i have to put away my own taxes. This way, i'm not caught April 15th trying to scrounge up thousands of dollars to pay Uncle Sam.

auto saving has netted me a nice little buffer and a pretty decent travel account.

Very important points, Even more so when you've got things to pay for and a family to support. Luckily at the moment I'm still living with my parents so if I don't make money at least I still have somewhere to live, but I'm going to start to get into the habits that you suggested so when the time comes in a few months I'll be ready to move out and won't be completely panicked with money worries.

Good stuff. Even if you are not a full time freelancer.

I must be weird like you, because I stare and alter my budget all the time.

A good post: luckily I'm not so much a freelancer as (self-employed) agency-based these days, but there's still a lot of 'flux' in our income on a monthly basis
