May 1st - RSS Awareness Day

RSS Awareness DayYou know what a RSS feed is, right? Well, not a lot of people do! It seems many folks have no idea what RSS means, how to use it and why.

If you’re already reading your favorite websites via a feed reader, great, you rock! If, on the other hand, you have no idea what I’m talking about (you still rock though!), Daniel Scocco of DailyBlogTips started RSSday.org.

What Is RSS?

RSS stands for ‘Really Simple Syndication”. In plain english that means you can ’subscribe’ to your favorite websites and blogs and let these sites come to you and read them all in one place instead of having to visit every day or so.

Some people can explain the concept better than me though! So here’s a video! :)

The goal with RSS Day is to spread the word about RSS and feeds. Best thing to do now is to sign up for a feed reader like Netvibes, Google Reader or Bloglines, grab our RSS feed, and enjoy!

Make sure to visit RSSDay.org for more info! :)

Hi Martin, actually you’re right, it is Workers Day. Daniel from DailyBlogTips mentionned it on his blog: http://www.dailyblogtips.com/t.....eness-day/

A little confusing I agree. Like Daniel I had no idea today was the ‘International Workers’ Day’.

Although I already use RSS, I loved how the video explained it. However, I wonder at this point if RSS is ever really going to catch on in a big way with the general public. If people have a way of doing something they are used to that works, they won’t necessarily change when something better comes along. Good enough is good enough for most people. For example, the Dvorak keyboard is better than QWERTY, but no one is going to change. RSS is clearly better than going to the websites, but most people are just fine with this. If RSS hasn’t caught on yet, I don’t think it ever well.
