Open Thread: How Can We Improve FreelanceFolder?

Posted March 31, 2009 in News, Open Thread 15 Comments »

So, it’s been a while since we’ve asked this question — but the time has come for us to make some improvements to the site and content, and we need your help to figure out what we should focus on.

Earlier this year we launched a redesign, and I think we made a lot of awesome changes, but there are also a lot of things we definitely still need to improve. Over the next month or so we’re planning on launching a refresh of the current design that makes some little improvements over the current iteration. If you have any suggestions or input for this refresh it would be a huge help to us and hopefully make the site better for everyone.

We’ve also been putting a lot of effort into producing some of the best freelance content on the web, but again we still need to make some improvements. Content is one area where you can have a huge impact, and your recommendations and thoughts can directly change what gets published.

So, what do you think? How can we improve the site?

How can we enhance the design to make things easier to find, and make the site more usable?

What type of content should we cover, what is most useful to you? Do you have any feedback about the articles we’ve been publishing lately?

Do you have any other thoughts, big or small, that you want us to know about?

Well, before you get an onslaught of “we want this” comments, just thought I’d say that I love FreelanceFolder, from my point of view, just make sure you keep doing what your doing right now :)

I actually agree with Tim…no major complaints. I can’t even really think of anything I would change right now. You’re doing a good job!

    Hey Tim and Colin,

I appreciate the support :-) We definitely won’t be changing anything drastic, and we’ll try to keep doing everything that’s been working.

Most of the improvements I want to make really fall into the category of ‘refinements’ as opposed to any major changes. But I’ll let everyone know more as soon as some of the goodies are ready to be launched.

The only thing I think would be useful is a search capability.
There are so many useful articles, it would be nice to see beyond the first few pages.

Other than that… keep it up!

    Hey Troy,

Definitely coming! The search bar was something that got accidentally removed when we were making changes a little while ago.

Rest assured, it will be back in force very shortly :-)

I have to say, I really like Freelance Folder and I can not say Freelance Switch is better than you guys. I love both sites and enjoy reading your articles.

I guess I could suggest you guys have an article on why blogging is important for freelancers and what the benefits are. Blogging is a huge thing and I’m sure many freelancers are contemplating whether to start a blog. Give them a reason and talk about the benefits. It would be a great article I think.

I would suggest some more resources, or perhaps organizing a few ‘kits’ of resources for various areas of freelancing. I have always felt that section was a little neglected, but otherwise just keep up the good work!

I really like your site. I get a lot of useful information from it. What I would like to see is a subject line that I could see when I save all of your emails to a folder.

Right now my file shows Freelance Folder and the subject says the same thing. I am not a computer guru so that makes it difficult for me to go back to older email issues to look for particular topics of interest.

There are only two sites that I subscribe to that do that- Freelance Folder and Problogger. Both good sites but for the convenience of your readers, me and I am sure many others, being able to go back to previous emails by looking at the subject would be very helpful.

    Thanks for listening.

Every post is excellent and thoroughly researched.
Try to increase the no. of post. I can’t stop visiting this blog everyday. So other freelancers like me can hang in here if the no. of are increased.

Whatever it is but the FREELANCE FOLDER Rockssss!!!!

I read lots of blogs on freelancing, and some who were still doing well a few months ago are predicting a bleak April. Their clients are cutting back more and more, and some are simply going bankrupt.

How about a piece on how It’s Always Darkest Just Before Dawn (because it is)?

How about a piece on how even a newbie (such as myself) can get started during a prolonged recession?

Those are two ideas that struck me this morning, along with how great your blog is. I always visit and will continue doing so.

I have another one. I just bought a domain name: http://www.Cardimon-Communications.com.

It is being hosted by BlueHost. The site is dormant, a placeholder for the moment. I haven’t a clue how to get a quick-and-dirty site going. I want to list my name, what I do, and contact information in a way that does not drive customers away in disgust.

Can you provide really basic instructions on something like this?

How to get a website running in 5 or 10 easy steps. Many thanks.

@Craig, What do you say about wordpress? It is easy to use and install also. Only couple of steps required to start website or blog..

Get an events calendar that community members can nominate or submit (for review perhaps) events to!

There are lots of free webinars and teleseminars that would be of interest to freelancers and independent consultants — be a central organizing point for that.

At MBO Partners we have a few webinar series of completely educational content that we would love to contribute to that calendar. The next event coming up is Contracts 101: Negotiating Consulting Agreements in Your Favor. The last one was super popular about Consulting Bill Rate Calculation.

Marketers like @joelcomm also have free webinars that are awesome, like the Social Media Bootcamp series, and I’m sure there are more if we look for them.

As long as the events are not sales pitches (some moderation may be required) it would be an awesome feature.

@Nikhil – I use Blogger myself. WordPress requires SQL and all that.
