Open Thread: What Are Your Work Hours?
Posted December 29, 2008 in News 39 Comments »
Given the response to last week’s open thread, I think we should continue to examine some of the finer points of freelance business. This week’s topic? Work hours.
Many people start freelancing because of the promise of freedom and the ability to choose your own hours. But what does the typical freelance workday really look like?
How many hours do you spend on client work? How about your own projects? When do you communicate with clients? These are details that will be really valuable in this thread — bits of information that will be both interesting to experienced freelancers and invaluable to people just getting started.

December 29th, 2008 at 11:42 amI’ll kick things off with my response:
1. Official business hours are 8-5, and someone (not always me) is usually available to answer phone calls and email during that time.
2. I spend much of my day working on personal projects, in fact most of the day, but that’s a bit unusual for a freelancer. If you read the upcoming FreelanceFolder ebook you’ll learn a lot more about this.
3. I work some weekends, but not all. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to actually get a break from work, even when things are really busy.
4. Time off… That’s a hard one… I usually take about two vacations per year, for a week or so each. I also take off weekends too, and I think that counts. I will occasionally take a Friday or mid-week holiday off as well.
5. There are two critical bits of advice I have when it comes to work hours. First, don’t be a slave to your clients — always set proper boundaries. Second, don’t burn yourself out.
If you can live by those two, you’ll be in really good shape.
Cheers :-)

December 29th, 2008 at 11:44 am1. What are your official business hours?
I dont have official hours. Typically I start work sometime after 9am and end work sometime around 11pm
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Too much.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Yes. The weekend is when I get a majority of my work done. My wife is Realtor so we are both self employed. This means that we work constantly but have flexibility and answer to no one but our clients. It works for us….
4. How much time do you take off?
What’s that? Seriously. this is one area that we need to improve for 2009 but I would say to anyone that is considering a move to freelancing that you end up working more as a freelancer than you would as an employee at a company. So if you are envisioning 10 hour work weeks it ain’t gonna happen. But you can, however, choose to work from Starbucks or the Beach or wherever you wish.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
It is difficult and not for everyone.

December 29th, 2008 at 11:49 amSince I’ve started doing freelance work I’ve shifted around my hours. I look at it more like flextime than set hours. If I need to do something else one day, I do. I’m not worried about keeping the same schedule every day as long as the work gets finished.
The personal project/client work split is one that’s in constant change too. There are days I go in expecting to work on a client’s site all day only to stop after an hour because the clients hasn’t yet sent over everything. It’s times like these that I tend to just work on the blog or keep up with social networking.
I try to keep from working on weekends, but if the week has been light I don’t hesitate when the work comes heavier on the weekend. I’ve only had a couple client who intentionally dumped work to me on the weekend because they were too busy otherwise. Other than that it tends to be clear.

December 29th, 2008 at 11:49 amOh, I’ll hop right on into this one!
1. What are your official business hours?
As stated on our site: We’re available 7 days a week from dawn to dusk EST. (We’d be open 24/7, but we need to eat and sleep.)
The reality? I start at 5am and end sometime around 10pm. Of course, there are various breaks in between, but not as many as I’d like.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
A couple of hours a week, but I also try to devote larger chunks of time every couple of months to focus and progress.
3. Do you work on weekends?
I try to reserve a few hours on weekends for family and myself. But I do work every day, yes.
4. How much time do you take off?
Hm. Good question. Not as much as I’d like. I *need* time off. When I don’t take spme, I basically suck at my own work, get tired, get irritable and want to quit. Now I make a point of taking at LEAST five hours a day on weekends and an hour or two on weekdays.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
I think we fall into traps of doing too much and burning ourselves out. Those that last through the burnout quickly realize that freelancing is a job like any other and that they need to set limits for their own happiness, productivity and overall enjoyment of what they do.

December 29th, 2008 at 11:51 amOne extra note:
Freelancers (I find) don’t schedule “the unexpected” into their schedules. They book up their day or week, then something goes wrong, and they’re short of time, taking double-bites to compensate.
Plan for the unexpected. Schedule it in. Even an hour a day. If nothing goes wrong, GREAT! You have an extra hour to get more done! If it does go wrong, it won’t throw you off track.

December 29th, 2008 at 12:01 pm1. Back when I was freelancing full time my hours were 10-6 for phone calls but my actual production hours would vary depending on my schedule.
2. For my freelance hours this just about all I do. I am constantly working on new ideas for personal web sites, or working on a conceptual design.
3. I definitely work weekends. This is when I catch up on writing blog posts, finish up that project that got pushed to the side, or just brainstorm.
4. I think I take very little time off, but I like it that way. However, I am planning to take off 2 weeks either summer 2009 or spring 2010 :-)
5. Definitely set boundaries, but don’t be afraid to go the extra mile when you can benefit. Offering rush fees and weekend rates can be a good way to make extra cash and give your clients a quicker turnaround.

December 29th, 2008 at 12:06 pm1. Don’t have “official” hours. Usually work from 9-4
2. I spend about 20-30% of my time on personal projects
3. Don’t usually work on weekends
4. Take as much time off as possible. ;) Unfortunately, that means not very many holidays
5. This is one of the biggest benefits of being a freelancer. If you can structure your hours effectively, you’ll never go back to a “real job”.

December 29th, 2008 at 1:18 pm1. What are your official business hours? 8-4 MTWR, 8-2 F
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects? 3hrs a week
3. Do you work on weekends? YES, I like a slow Monday
4. How much time do you take off? Not much
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours? It’s sometimes hard to balance since you normally don’t get paid until the job is done.

December 29th, 2008 at 1:27 pm1. What are your official business hours?
9-5 It depends on my school timetable.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
3 hours per week, only for promote my services.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Sure, because on weekends I have more calm for work.
4. How much time do you take off?
Nearly 4 hours each day.

December 29th, 2008 at 1:46 pm1. What are your official business hours?
Never made them official, but I’m in the office M-F, from 9 til at least 5 for phone calls. But it’s not set in stone.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Personal projects like my personal blog? Hm.. Between 3 and 10 hours a week I guess. I’ll try to track my personal blogging time from 1/1/09 on.
3. Do you work on weekends?
It depends on how I feel and how it fits. I try not to work on customers’ projects on weekends and I don’t make myself available by phone or mail. I get mails and sometimes read them but unless it’s VERY urgent, I’ll start replying to them on Monday.
4. How much time do you take off?
As much as I can. Usually by reading, watching movies, going to the cinema or getting sleep.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
When you start freelancing, you what goals work for you. Some can afford to and stick to strict ofice hours and leaving everything on their desk when driving home. Some like me have some fuzzy goals like “I wan’t to have enough time to go to the gym, get sleep on weekends, just shutdown my computer.”. Therefore you gotta have or develop some kind of feeling for how much load you can / want to handle.

December 29th, 2008 at 2:13 pm1. What are your official business hours?
Nothing official. I am available to my clients 5 days a week during “normal” hours by phone, and all weekend via email. I usually write hardcore from 11-3 and then maybe a couple of hours after dinner.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
A minimum of 50% of my time. When things are quiet, I work on personal projects to monetize my sites and get my brand perfected.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Usually. Why not?
4. How much time do you take off?
I took the month of December off from my political blog. It’s my best income earner, but it’s also the most exhausting. Post-election, with all the wars and strife and Mumbai… it didn’t exactly say Christmas to me, ya know? I hired another, newer blogger to give him a chance at my traffic for a month.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
LoveloveLOVE them. I couldn’t imagine going back.

December 29th, 2008 at 2:16 pm1. What are your official business hours?
9am – 5:30pm PST
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
It fluctuates depending on my workload, but id say – on average about 20% of my office hours are spent blogging, social networking, and doing design/development for pet projects.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Rarely. Only if I’m on a tight deadline and I’m getting extra $$ for it. Sometimes I do personal projects on the weekends, but that’s not worky work.
4. How much time do you take off?
I usually work no more than 50 hours/ week – and am usually successful at that – if you mean vacation – that’s rare, But I am planning to make time for one in ‘09 – maybe.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
One draw to freelance for me was that I could determine my own worth. Working at a firm on salary, the more you work, the less your hour is worth, during my time as a 9to5r I would sometimes work so many hours in one week that hourly, my salary worked out to being close to minimum wage. I’d often sacrifice a whole weekend to make a projects deadline with no real incentive other than not getting fired.
What’s great about freelance is that how much you make and work is really up to you. (Of course your skills, demand, sellablity factor in.) Too many freelancers under price themselves. If you have to work an 80 hour week just to make it, then you aren’t charging enough.
Also a lot of us work on personal projects like our blogs that aren’t bringing in much (or any) income – but its just so damned fun! In a way I am always working cause I’m always thinking about new projects, marketing, etc. A good freelancer is always working on their business cause it’s your passion – however if you’re hunched over your keyboard on a Saturday morning doing something other than updating your Facebook – you better be collecting fat$$ for it! :)

December 29th, 2008 at 2:37 pm1. What are your official business hours?
I don’t have official hours, really. I start working after breakfast, and I stop working when I realize that I’ve spent more time playing with the formatting on my code than I have writing it. Generally, I put in about four hours first thing, then another 6+ from afternoon on until bed.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Whatever time I have. Generally I find myself buried under multiple deadlines and feel guilty if I’m not working on the client’s project, but when I finish up a pressing project, I’ll generally reward myself by putting some hours in on a passion project.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Absolutely. If I have plans, I’ll take a weekend off, but I refuse to take time off if I don’t have something worth doing. Watching TV just doesn’t qualify as reason enough to not be making progress…
4. How much time do you take off?
As much as I feel comfortable with. If I haven’t fallen behind on anything, I’ll take time off whenever I have an opportunity to go be social or spend time with friends or family (which, granted, isn’t really all that often). Around deadline time, though, I’ll just turn off my phone and stay indoors for a day or two with all the lights off and get cranking.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
I think the trick is to remember that (hopefully) you’re a freelancer because you found a way to do what you love for a living. I think it’s important to recognize that “work” for us isn’t the same as work for a lot of people; putting in those extra hours isn’t really detracting from my quality of life.

December 29th, 2008 at 2:52 pmWhat are your official business hours?
I don’t officially state them, as I freelance on-top of a regular job (moonlighter). My clients know I’m available by phone from about 7A-9A and from 8PM till 10PM. Because I am upfront about this, it works well for everyone, and if there is an emergency, I can always be flexible.
How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Depends on other workload, but I can spend up to 20%, but it is generally 5-10%. I would like to get this to be consistently at 20-25% so I’m not dependent upon outside clients.
Do you work on weekends?
I often do. How much depends of the project, due dates, etc.
How much time do you take off?
I don’t take much off. I do take at least a day a week, and usually at least 1 evening a week to make sure I can re-charge.
Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
My wife (freelance photographer) officially lists her hours as 9 to 5, although she’ll take phone calls if she can from about 7:30AM till 8PM. Being a bit flexible, and willing to answer the phone at 4:55PM has gotten her several jobs. Likewise, I’ve found that being flexible goes well for having long-term relationships with clients.
Mark Richardson
December 29th, 2008 at 3:40 pmI work 9 to 6 most days. Personal projects? Who has time? Friday is usually a half day.
Shevonne
December 29th, 2008 at 3:42 pm1. What are your official business hours? I don’t have set hours because I have a full-time job, and I am currently freelancing part-time. I don’t go to bed before midnight though.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects? I probably spend two hours a day working on my personal site.
3. Do you work on weekends? Yes, but I make sure to not allow it to interfere with my time with my children.
4. How much time do you take off? Whenever I want to de-stress.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours? Work hours should be tailored to when you are most productive. Some people work better in the early mornings; others at night. Don’t let people dictate what the “norm” should be.
Carter Harkins
December 29th, 2008 at 5:16 pm1. What are your official business hours? I pretty much answer the phone whenever it rings, and work whenever I can. I work from home, and share in the responsibility for taking care of my 2 year-old son. So some days don’t start until 5pm and may run until 4am. The quiet hours are usually the most productive anyway, so it works out great. I spend about 4-6 hrs a day on client work, 6 days a week.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects? I have so many personal projects, and a few that actually make a buck or two, so I try to spend 2 or 3 hours a day on them.
3. Do you work on weekends? Almost always, but I work it around family outings and fun stuff.
4. How much time do you take off? Not enough, I guess. But I love my work, and it energizes me, so I guess I don’t need a whole lot of time away from it. For my family’s sake, I should take more time, though.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours? Work whenever you are inspired! Not always practical, but if you can do the mundane things when you aren’t feeling creative, and then burn both ends of the candle when you are in that creative sweet spot, you’ll find you do better work overall.

December 29th, 2008 at 5:25 pmOfficial business hours: 9 AM to 5 PM, local time
I have no idea how much time I spend on personal projects. I spend time with them whenever I can and want to, though I can say that the time has reduced in half in the past 8 months.
Yeah! I do work on weekends. Sometimes.
I take a lot of time off, unfortunately. That’s why I do not own a fortune 500 company.
Janet Martin
December 29th, 2008 at 6:28 pm1. What are your official business hours?
I work from about 9 AM to 5 PM with occasional longer hours when required.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Too much! Probably about 1.5 hours a day.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Yes. I work some weekends so I’m trying to get better at scheduling time during the week.
4. How much time do you take off?
Ha! I never feel like I leave the business, but then again, that’s how I worked when I was in a company. This is another area I liked to improve in the new year.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
Lately I’ve been thinking about time differences between freelancers and how they could work to our advantage. For example, imagine being a web designer in the UK and firing off a project to a writer in Vancouver, Canada (where I am) at the end of your business day? You could get copy for your client magically overnight. Well, theoretically. :)
Julian
December 29th, 2008 at 7:01 pmLet me start off by saying that I love the flexibility of my hours and take full advantage of this situation.
What are your official business hours?
No clear cut lines really. Clients can contact me whenever they see me online or I will respond whenever I see an e-mail. One of my odd points is for my body rhythm to flip every few weeks. An example of this is that one month I work in the daytime just like ordinary workers and for the next month and a half, I wake up at 4pm and work throughout the wee hours of the night/morning. I formally state 11:00 AM – 2:00 AM regardless.
How much time do you spend on personal projects?
This fluctuates wildly from 0 hour to all day. I take time for personal work depending on my mood and more importantly, the proximity of an assignment’s deadline.
Do you work on weekends?
Yes. Just another day as far as I’m concerned.
How much time do you take off?
If I’m burnt out I take 2 weeks doing 10 -15 hours of work and then return to my normal schedule. Otherwise I take most major holidays and one whole random day when I don’t feel like it.
Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
ADDICTIVE. Withdrawal symptoms might occur if user is forced to be a part of an 8 – 4, five days a week work environment. :-)
Sean
December 29th, 2008 at 8:33 pmSince I’m still working another job (teaching) I work when i can which means weekends and evenings. Once i get enough regular work to quit my day job, I’ll drop down the evening/weekends.
Debbie
December 29th, 2008 at 11:22 pm1. What are your official business hours?
8-5, but that’s flexible because I spend several hours per week out on client visits or other work-related meetings. Sometimes it’s 7:30-3, others it might be 10-7. It just depends.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Sometimes, quite a lot. But lately ‘personal’ has been overlapping ‘business.’
3. Do you work on weekends?
Sometimes. Like this weekend, I decided I finally needed a business card for my reseller hosting company. I spent about 5 hours Sunday on that. But I don’t regularly work on weekends or at night.
4. How much time do you take off?
I try to take at least one full week of vacation and a few smaller ones. I also will take a day or half-day off every so often just to refresh myself – take the camera and go hiking for the afternoon, or go to Denver to see museum or something like that.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
It’s important to take breaks. Get outside, go to the gym, do something totally different, get out of the comfort zone. This is important even when it seems to ‘interfere’ with work – I think it’s essential for sanity no matter how busy one gets.
richard
December 30th, 2008 at 1:13 amExcellent question.
What are your official business hours?
I typically take care of admin time from 4pm – 7pm
handle phone calls, emails, asset wrangling etc. then start work around 11:30ish pm after the kids go to sleep. and work until i cant think straight which is usually about 7 or 8 am. however, there are frequent smoke breaks / coffee breaks / xbox breaks in that stretch. I find it a lot more productive for me to be able to step away for about thirty minutes or so every couple of hours to decompress a little or mull over a problem and then jump back in somewhat refreshed.
How much time do you spend on personal projects?
honestly, maybe one or two full nights a week when the workload allows.
Do you work on weekends?
only if i absolutely HAVE to. i hate working on weekends. I’d much rather spend with chasing the my soon to be 2year olds around the yard and running errands.
How much time do you take off?
similar to the answer above… as much as i can, but not nearly as much organized time off as id like.
Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
when theres work to be done theres usually a ton of it to do. an when theres not so much work it means not so much of a paycheck and lots of time to develop new strategies or those labor of love projects. I’d say its not for everyone, some people just need structure of a 9-5. I’m no slacker. i just believe in working on what i want when i want and getting paid for it. good times.

December 30th, 2008 at 11:56 am1. What are your official business hours?
“Officially” they are 9 to 5:30. But, most of my clients like to start sending me work around 4:30, which keeps me working a bit longer. I do work before 9, but I don’t answer the phone until then. I just need time in the morning to get started without interruption. Oh, and I usually work thru lunch.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects?
Not as much as I should. When I have slow days I research or try to learn new technologies, but I don’t have specific time set aside.
3. Do you work on weekends?
Occasionally. Usually just to catch up or because I have a lot of meetings the following week and won’t have as much “at my desk” time. If I work, it’s usually on Sundays as I’m trying to be better about ALWAYS taking Saturday off.
4. How much time do you take off?
Not as much as I’d like. Maybe 3 weeks total a year which includes a week at Christmas to see the family.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
Be sure to make time for yourself, especially to get outside and get some fresh air.
I wish clients would be more respectful of work hours…calling on the weekend is way out of line.
It’s nice to be able to work when I want or don’t want instead of adhering to someone else’s set of hours. When I don’t have anything going on, I don’t work. Simple as that….Can’t really do that in an office environment.
cam
December 30th, 2008 at 12:27 pmWhat are your official business hours?
officially 10am-6pm. People are like ‘office hours? you work at home!” But it is true when you set when you are available client start to respect your time at won’t send/contact you at all hours of the day and night
How much time do you spend on personal projects?
This is actually pretty bad maybe 3 hrs a week. Thats a goal for 09 to get that to about 1-2hrs a day.
Do you work on weekends?
If I feel like it. I have been better at not working, getting back to playing video games, dancing (former dancer), etc.
How much time do you take off?
maybe a whole day every other week. Mental health day my mom calls it.
Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
SUPER IMPORTANT to set “official” hours even if you like to work all hours of the day.Just because you like to work at 2am doesn’t mean your clients need to know that.

December 30th, 2008 at 12:36 pm9-5 in my out-of-home office, sometimes as early as 8:45 or as late as 5:15. Back on at home at 8:00pm if I need to catch up. Weekend afternoons for an hour or two during son’s naptime. Weekend evenings if necessary too.

January 5th, 2009 at 11:29 pm1. What are your official business hours? – I like to work late so I usually start my day at 2pm and end it at about midnight. One reason I love the internet is I can work with clients in different timezones.
2. How much time do you spend on personal projects? – I would say about 20 hours a week, unless I got something really exciting going on.
3. Do you work on weekends? – If I can get the work.
4. How much time do you take off? – Way to much.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours? – The more you work, the more you make. Workaholics really win in this game.

4. How much time do you take off?
Last year I had 2 weeks vacation, and another week and a half at Christmas.
5. Any other thoughts about freelance work hours?
I negotiated one day off a week with my boss so I could have time to pursue my own freelance and personal work. I needed it to keep inspired; I was also working too much in the evenings and weekends. My boss agreed because he saw the benefit in my having a happy and more relaxed lifestyle, and it would be building my professional experience. So far, its been a win-win situation, couldn’t have worked out better!

I just try to let my clients know that I do have business hours. Because i’m freelancing that doesn’t mean they can email or call me at all times of the night (I’ve had people call and leave messages at 2am and expect me to get back to them right away). I let them know by placing my hours in my email signature.
