Open Thread: What Type of Freelancer Are You?
Posted October 12, 2009 in Lifestyle, Open Thread 96 Comments »
Here’s a very simple question that we haven’t asked before on FreelanceFolder: what kind of freelancer are you? Are you a designer, developer, writer, photographer, or something else entirely?
Within your specific field, do you have any specialties? Do you focus on coding Wordpress themes, writing for business blogs, or photographing weddings?
Tell us about yourself in the comments. Hopefully we can all learn a little bit more about each other, and maybe even build some useful new connections or find some work. Feel free to link to your website or social media profiles as well :-)

October 12th, 2009 at 10:13 amI’m a web designer and front-end web developer, specializing in creating custom WordPress themes.
I of course also do static xhtml/css sites too, and dabble in a bit of flash, etc. but WordPress certainly has my heart. I literally learn 5-10 new tips or tricks with each new WordPress site that I develop, and am constantly amazed by just how versatile the platform is!
I’m fairly active on twitter – http://twitter.com/idesignstudios/ – and my portfolio is at http://www.idesignstudios.com/portfolio/
In my lack of spare time, I write about web design and freelancing on my own blog, and have a few posts up here on Freelance Folder, too! :) http://freelancefolder.com/author/selene-m/

October 12th, 2009 at 10:36 amI’m a freelance blogger/writer. Since most of the topics of my writing are green issues and weddings, I’m currently trying to specialize on those, though I enjoy writing on other topics as well.
I have my writing published — print and online — since 2006, but only launched my freelance writing career on January 2009. After realizing that I haven’t been too serious, I’m re-launching the business soon (the real serious one).
My writing mission is to make words enjoyed as a delicate feast :)

October 12th, 2009 at 10:40 amI consider myself a “jack-of-just-about-anything”, though more specifically I’m a designer focusing in print, packaging, and logo development. Oh, and as a way of keeping myself both mentally active and (hopefully) more marketable, over the last year I’ve also been teaching myself web design and development, and hope to incorporate it fully into my bag o’ tricks.

October 12th, 2009 at 11:24 amWell, my real background is advertising, but I ended up doing graphic design, and now web design and soon enough photography again.
I guess that makes me a bit of a mercenary, cause I try to offer my clients more than just a website with a logo, they get really excited with the idea of throwing in marketing plans, social media, videos and stuff.
Honestly, I’m usually more excited than they are :)
Thanks for sharing guys!

October 12th, 2009 at 11:55 amI’m a b2b online copywriter focusing on using content marketing to help businesses in the chemical and manufacturing industries turn website visitors into customers. Or – I mostly write web page content, blogs, and emails.
With that said, I just started freelancing and am in the “finding my first clients” stage of the biz. So it might be more accurate to say that the above is what I want to be able to say in the future and pretty much anything even close that I can GET to is what I’m doing now.

October 12th, 2009 at 11:59 amI am a freelance Ruby developer (not specifically a RAILS developer :P ) and strive to provide a ridiculous level of customer satisfaction. Most of the time, I find that only small parts of your articles cross over into my domain simply because I do things so drastically differently than most development shops. I work in an “agile” manner (though I detest the word) and charge by the hour.
The clients often come to me with little more than the equivalent of a drawing on a napkin, and I help them run with their ideas. I don’t ask for specs and most often don’t want them. If anyone here has heard of SCRUM, I work in that manner but in a much tighter iteration. Essentially I deploy my progress nearly every hour and communicate with my clients in between, so they see their product taking shape nearly immediately.
I can’t tell you how amazing this workflow has been :) The clients love it and it’s pretty exhilarating to be able to give them _exactly_ what they want, because in the end, their initial ideas change so drastically that the paper napkin barely resembles the end product :)
Anywho :) Sorry for the novel, heh heh. I would loooove to see more developer-themed posts, though :) We are out there and we are definitely listening, haha!

October 12th, 2009 at 12:02 pmI’m the Creative Director of The Phuse, a design agency based in Toronto. While I love designing, I try to find myself in more consultation-based roles and management positions. When I’m not doing that, I design for print, identity, and web, as well as do front-end development, photography, and help companies with marketing campaigns.
We don’t have a niche – I try to scape everything over a large audience, however we have found ourselves with a lot of small businesses lately.

October 12th, 2009 at 12:16 pmWe deal specifically with WordPress MU – the multi-blog version of WordPress that will eventually be rolled into core.
Most of what we do is development work, not so much on the design side. We also help people figure out what they need and how to get WPMU to do what they want.

October 12th, 2009 at 12:45 pmI’m glad you asked me what I’m and what interests me most! Well … I’m a copywriter with some years of experience in writing ads, ad-campaigns and brochures and flyers etc etc. I recently started writing for websites too. I love the medium as it is quite dynamic with periodic updation which otherwise impossible in print.
I recently upgraded to a higher position – to Creative Direction. I now give shape to marketing strategy and guide brands to fulfillment in lieu to the trends and customer perspectives. I now take up turn key projects of total branding assignments in creative direction to the advertising campaigns.
I love learning each day… hence I quit my day job and started freelancing and curious to learn more by investing my spare time reading popular marketing and management blogs. I’m interested in public speaking on personality development and branding – how and why should a brand needs to think like human and infusing a dynamic personality and life into it.
I have a website : http://insideoutadvertising.co.in/
and have a blog too ; http://www.creativesolomon.blogspot.com
Thanks for reading folks!

October 12th, 2009 at 1:59 pmI’m an illustrator. Don’t seem to be a lot of us lurking around freelance blogs, unless it’s those who also do graphic design and the like – and I’ll admit I’ve picked up more than my fair share of graphic and webdesign jobs as a general graphics monkey, but I’m kind of unqualified to do them and mostly end up with them in spite of myself.

I work well with CMS’s as my work works with a few of them, I can also make wordpress theme’s.

October 13th, 2009 at 8:52 amI’m a freelance software developer who happens to end up mostly building custom web-based applications. I try to avoid being called a “web developer” because that term is often taken to imply visual design and/or copywriting work, both of which fall outside of my primary skillset.
Like Keith Hanson, my field and methods fall somewhat outside the scope of most articles posted here and I’d very much like to see more content for those of us who build things which aren’t directly visible to our clients. (Unlike Keith, I generally don’t even have a sketch on a napkin to start with…)
I sporadically write at http://sherohman.org about life in general and at http://code.sherohman.org about software development, but I’m a lousy blogger – I tend to be too busy writing code to bother with writing *about* code. I can also be found as @DaveSherohman on Twitter.
In addition to my own skills, I also live with a freelance translator doing English-to-Swedish and Spanish-to-Swedish work.

October 13th, 2009 at 11:37 amHi Mason,
Thanks for asking! I’m a designer with years of print experience (identity/collateral/packaging) who is entranced by web design. My varied background allows me to work with clients to develop the bulk of their marketing needs.
I particularly enjoy designing websites from the ground up, especially the PSD to HTML/CSS process. Lately I’ve utilized CSS3 rules and font-replacement techniques as much as possible. (Gotta feed the print designer in me!) Custom-designed WordPress sites/blogs are fast-becoming my specialty.
I enjoy the variety of projects I have. When I tire of making a layout work in IE, there’s another project that requires old fashioned pencil and paper. And for every print job limited to one or two colors–there’s a web project with 16M+ colors at my disposal!

October 13th, 2009 at 12:47 pmHi! I’m a Luso-Brasilian Graphic Designer from PORTUGAL. Freelancer since 2001 (with some companies in the middle).
I work in corporate identity, logos, print design, packaging, web design and training.
I’m starting to improve my knowledge in programming with HTML, CSS, PHP and MySQL, as well as the WordPress platform.
My next goal is a Master degree in Marketing and Multimedia Communication.
I started my blog in May and increasingly I feel inspired to new posts.
I have a new personal project in hands of a new blog (using Wordpress) whose main theme will be the graphic design. It will be a new tool for those who are starting in this area. It’s main language should be portuguese but I want to have it’s content also in english (I’m still studying a way for that).

October 14th, 2009 at 3:50 pmI’m a freelance PA (called Virtual PA’s in America) and I work for various clients who have one thing in common – they’re brilliant & creative but very disorganised and chaotic!
The work I do for them varies depending on what they do for a living, but includes reconciling end of month accounts, office management (filing, opening post, paying bills, email & diary management, call answering, etc) research, data-entry, excel spreadsheet, typing up word documents, writing copy, chasing payments and databasing- or anything else that they may need doing!
I am also fascinated by social media and offer 2 packages where I can either train and assist the client in setting up their online profile, or I can manage their online presence completely.
I love that every day is different and that what I do makes a marked difference to their business – By doing the routine yet essential admin tasks for them, I give them more free time so they can focus on moving their business forward.

I pretty much get my hands on everything. cd/dvd cover artwork, posters, flyers, logos, web sites, myspace layouts, twitter backgrounds, flash galleries, clothing and some short film editing. Been in the game since 2004. I have developed and grown in so many ways since i started. I am self taught, but i did go to school and get my AA in graphic design. I believe that you can always learn something new, and I learn something new everyday from my fellow freelancers. Freelancing is the way to go, so go do it.

November 22nd, 2009 at 11:40 pmI’m a little late on commenting on this, but I just came across it again today.
Another jack of all trades here. My past employment history has made it rather necessary to be the everything-computers-guy. Well, maybe not entirely ‘necessary,’ but it would have been rather boring to adhere strictly to the official job descriptions and lessened my value as an employee. :)
I’m a freelance/independent [insert some IT related title here]. I generally use the old standby of Consultant, but would like to come up with something better as a title. Maybe there isn’t a better title, but if anyone has any ideas let me know.
My website is http://www.t3technet.com
My primary specialty has been computer networking – from cabling/infrastructure to administration, clients/servers, security, WiFi, etc. I also do programming and development. Mostly I work with Linux based systems and open source solutions. Like Dave Sherohman, the “web development” I do is more of the coding and back end variety. The visual and copywriting just doesn’t hold my interest enough to pursue further expertise. Additional IT skills include disaster-recovery, general data forensics, business continuity, systems analysis, printer repair and the typical PC support/repair.
Just to fully live up to the JOAT definition some other skills of mine, most of which I’ve made money doing at some point and occasionally still do on the side for some of them, are auto mechanics/repair, architecture/design, CAD/CAM, drywall hanging/finishing, commercial/residential construction, flooring, musician, sound production/mixing/recording, DJ/karaoke hosting, photography, and videography.
