Spreading Yourself Too Thin?

A lot of people start out by thinking that everything can be accomplished as a one man show, yet end up realizing that, at a certain point, things do tend to become overwhelming and, since we are only human and since the day only has 24 hours, acting accordingly is definitely a must.

Analyzing Your Situation

The first thing you need to do is analyze how things stand at this point as far as you are concerned. Are you able to handle everything or is it time to start taking action? You have to try your best in order to identify the tasks which are simply not worth your time.

Even if it seems that being a one man show works at this point, you have to analyze your situation and think about the future. The tasks which are not really worth your time do tend to add up and, if you don’t take action, you may end up working all day, only to realize that you haven’t actually accomplished anything worthwhile. Does that sound tempting? I didn’t think so!

Eliminate Things That Do Not Generate Results

A lot of people have let routine get the best of them and spend time on all sorts of activities which don’t really generate any results. They don’t do it because they have something to gain, they do it because it seems right, they do it because they have gotten used to the task in question.

Show no mercy when it comes to the tasks which are not generating results, eliminate them from your ‘to-do‘ list or it will only be a matter of time until they add up and become a serious threat to your personal productivity level.

But What About Tasks Which Are Generating Results?

There are also tasks which are not exactly all that challenging, yet generate results. As far as such tasks are concerned, delegating is the best way to go. Since they generate results but are not really worth your time, why not let somebody else take care of them?

At a certain point, you will simply have to delegate if you are serious about taking things to the next level. No matter how talented and productive you may be, you will not always be able to find the time for each and every task on your ‘to-do‘ list and, since you may not want to drop a task which is generating results altogether, delegating is your best option.

How You Manage Your Time Is Crucial!

In the end, you have to be extremely selective when it comes to the tasks you spend time on since, again: the day only has 24 hours and, even if you would like to be able to handle everything yourself, it is simply not possible.

Take action whenever you realize that a task is no longer worth your time. You can delegate or drop it altogether, depending on the results it is generating. The bottom line is that, if you are serious about taking things to the next level, acting accordingly is definitely a must.

I thought I was doing a good job of managing my time and then I got sick and everything feel apart for a few days.

Thanks for these tips and especially the focus on results.

I like your point “Eliminate Things That Do Not Generate Results”:

This is usually the best starting point to become more productive. The trick is not to squeeze the last percentage out of your day, but to ensure you focus on the important areas and you allocate enough time to them.

I find it fascinating that everytime I’m doubting myself and my abilities, I find an article on your blog that resonates with what I’m struggling with at the time.

I woke up today wondering what’s wrong with the direction I’m taking and realized that I am taking on too much and seeing very little in return. I guess we know when we’re spreading ourselves too thin. It’s a matter of whether we decide to make changes so that we’re more efficient with our time.

Thanks for the post. It made my Friday. I think I needed to hear it from a total stranger since I seem to ignore it from my friends.

“Analyze Your Situation” - I’m going to make this a priority this weekend.

I’ve definitely been here lately. I managed to get an insanely high-paying freelance job recently - so much that there was just no way to turn it down. Unfortunately, I had to sacrifice three solid weeks of good sleep to get things done while still keeping up the day job.

Your tips are definitely sound, though. By cutting out the non-essentials, I was able to make it through the insane patch.
