I will have to admit i have played my part in accidentally branding myself. I am basically a student and a freelancer, initially i used to do a lot of programming, then i did a couple of websites, now i am branded more as a designer, than a programmer :), which i am trying to break out.

Its a wonderfully true article.

Ya know, I never really thought about the negative connotations through accidental branding - but they can be very real. You can also think about it like typecasting with actors/actresses - once you've established yourself as a certain character, you may inadvertently be sealing your own fate in terms of being limited to a certain type of role.

Something else I might add, though, that falls in line here - becoming well known as a supplier of low cost content as a writer. Most writers, especially those who don't have a degree or training, likely start out at the low-end of the freelance writing pay scale. However, if they continue in that trend even as the quality of their work increases - they may have a hard time moving out of low-pay market into a more lucrative marketplace. I guess this is just another instance of accidental branding.

In any case - good post.

These are very good points. Thank you! This is coming from someone who is in the process of trying to develope an identity, from scratch - to infect the world with. It seems you should try to safe guard yourself and your brand, from being set in stone by others, rather than yourself. Thank you for the bestowed wisdom.

Thanks for the link and the mention, Bob.

I will say this: we're not sorry we're seen as Revolution Mag specialists. We were disappointed that people thought we couldn't do anything else. The accidental branding was fine. The accidental limited perception people had of our services was not.

We can do plenty with any theme. Bring it on.

Another note: One reason we began being branded as the Revolution specialists was because we did tell people, "These are good themes. Check them out." Brian's work has been recommended many other places as well. So yeah. It's HIS fault. At least he has many themes to work with!
