A better target is to have enough regular work that if you lost your biggest client, you'd still have enough for a bare-bones living (that is, enough to cover rent/mortgage, food, regular bills and transport/car costs). I worked at a company that had a few major clients and at one point it was looking like they all might bail and everyone freaked out.
