We are an independent record label not a big bad corporation out to sue you for file sharing, we WANT you to spread our music around. With such an overcrowded market place giving away your music is essential in my opinion. The biggest problem for emerging indie artists today is obscurity, not piracy. Give them free information about your area of expertise. That adds credibility to your sales message, makes you look professional, you become the expert, and when people see that you know what you're talking about they are more likely to do business with you because they know who you are. But as an editor, I always give a free sample edit for every potential project - usually around five page for a book-length manuscript. It demonstrates what I will do, so the client can determine if he likes my work. And it gives me an idea of how much work is involved so I can estimate a price.
